Modify Self Service User Role Property

Is there any way to modify the "SelfServiceuserRole" property of a VM?  I have a VM that doesn't have that property filled in, so it's not counting against the group quota in the self-service portal.

SQL Server Service Deployment Error (SCVMM 2012)

Hi,

I have a problem with SQL Server 2008 R2 STD Service Deployment with SCVMM 2012..

I follow all the steps in this TechNet blog http://blogs.technet.com/b/scvmm/archive/2011/09/27/vmm-2012-sql-server-profile.aspx but when I try to deploy the service, I receive this error:

Error (22042)
The service (%SeriveName%) was not successfully deployed. Review the event log to determine the cause before you take corrective action.

Recommended Action
The deployment can be restarted by retrying the job.

Thanks a lot,

Davide

Portal "Remote Control Session" Keyboard does not work

I'm trying to use the "Connect to VM" feature in the Self Service Portal, but it seems that Keyboard Input does not work at all on any of my VMs.  I'm running Win2k8 R2, Win2k3, and RHEL 5.5.  I have integrated services installed on all systems, as well as the mouse driver for the linux system.

I can see the desktop just fine on all systems, and I can control the mouse, but keyboard input does not work.

I believe this might be a network issue of some sort.  The Hyper-V cluster nodes are located on a subdomain, which is not normally resolvable through the DNS by other computers within the intranet.  To remedy this, I put entries for each of the nodes in my HOSTS file.  This allowed me to open the Remote Control Session successfully, except that the keyboard input doesn't work.  Any ideas?

Ghost Job locking VM

I'm currently using SCVMM in tandem with TFS Lab Management to virtualize our TFS testing lab for a SharePoint deployment.  In doing so, I've created a 3 machine environment in Network Isolation consisting of a SP 2010 Farm Stand Alone Server, a Domain Controller and a testing client.  I've built this environment up to a "test-ready" state and snapshotted it.

I'm now using this environment in a nightly build-deploy-test cycle that reverts to a snapshot, deploys SharePoint solutions and executes tests.  This has been working great for weeks.

While I was out on vacation last week, we hit the following reproducible error during our nightly executions:
 "Environment message: Type=Error; Message=TF259175: Team Foundation Server failed to restore the following environment to snapshot: <removed for privacy> . The restore operation failed on one or more virtual machines, and as a result the root of the environment snapshot tree has been reset. To recover from this condition, attempt to restore the environment again either to the same or a different snapshot.;

 Machine messages:

 Machine name: TFSLM-CLIENT

Machine message: Type=Error; Message=2606: Unable to perform the job because one or more of the selected objects are locked by another job.

Additional information: Failed task ID at SCVMM server is a9c9c330-dc9d-4b44-a0d9-bea5ed13ea97.
 Corresponding result name is Lab_97.;

 --------------------------------------------------
 Environment message: Type=Error; Message=TF259113: Team Foundation Server placed the environment in mixed state. A mixed state indicates that not all virtual machines are in the same state. Start (or stop) the environment to recover from this state. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator to bring the affected virtual machines into a usable state.;

 --------------------------------------------------"

Further investigation of this error in SCVMM via both UI and PowerShell get-job functions indicated there NO jobs currently in a "Running" state that could be locking this machine.

I then queried the SCVMM Database tables directly and found that the tbl_VMM_Lock table does indeed show a lock on the VM in question:
 Query
 SELECT [ObjectID]
       ,[ObjectType]
       ,[TaskID]
       ,[LockType]
   FROM [SCVMM_DB].[dbo].[tbl_VMM_Lock]
   WHERE ObjectID = '3DF8ACE0-AB46-42B7-82FE-9DEFB361594C'
-- this is the failing VM's GUID.

 Output:
 ObjectID ObjectType TaskID LockType
 3DF8ACE0-AB46-42B7-82FE-9DEFB361594C VM 9BBE38FA-80D1-487F-A802-46B3F773E959 2

The TaskID denoted in the Lock doesn't exist in any of the tbl_TR_* tables as a task so I feel like it's a ghost row.  I deleted it and a replacement row just reappears.

Inject script to start-vm step in VMM - Could be ?

Hello,

I'm cloning a machine by automated workflow (Orchestrator), I can't start the cloned machine because it has the same name & IP like the production server which I've cloned.

I need to find a way to change the cloned server name (OS level) and IP (probably netsh) - there is any way to lunch\Inject script in start-VM action ? (VMM, not SSP).

Thanks !

Increment Machine Name in SCVMM 2012 SSP ??

Hello !

I'm trying SCVMM 2012 and i'have got an issue.

I made some VM Templates, i wanted to incremente VMs names during creation. So i put in the VM template : "Machine name : VMTEST###"

If I use machine creation with the VM Template in the SCVMM console, everything is working great, but if i try to do the same thing with the SSP, it doesn't work. I mean apparently, from SSP, it's not capable to transform ### of an increment.

How can I do ?

Thanks

Multiple subnets of the same address, separated by VLANs

Hi,

Is it possible to build a multi tenancy cloud solution with multiple clouds sharing the same subnet (ie 192.168.0.0/24) but separated by VLAN?

Customers are likely going to want the ability to provision servers that reside on the same subnet, but cannot see any other customer's servers which are in a different cloud.

I've tried it in my SCVMM 2012 RC lab, but it won't let me create a second network with the same subnet address.

Thanks in advance.

Finding VM name from inside Linux Guest OS

So I know I can find the VM name of a windows machine through a registry key after the Guest Services are install.  Can I do the same thing within a Linux machine?  I have a RHEL 5.5 guest OS, with Integrated Components 2.1 installed.  Is the name of the VM stored anywhere on the system where I can access it?

windows size / resolution when connecting via scvmm console

Hi

right... please see attached screenshot for my problem..

As you can see... the windows is the usual size, but the server VM it is displaying is not showing as it should.. something has gone wrong with the display settings..

The only resolution I've found, is to restart the server.. which isn't really an option with this server... it will cause quite a lot of problems....

What can I do to fix this?

I've tried the obvious stuff like dragging the window to increase the size etc... stuff like that..

but it must be something on the server since it fixes it self when I reboot an affected server...

Has anyone else seen this?

and what can I do to fix it :)

Hi,

I have added XenServer host to scvmm2012 i could easily carry out all the basic operation such as star/stop/suspend/resume/create vm but the issue iam seeing is scvmm did not retrieve the computer names of the virtual mahcine on xen server. Can anyone help me out in figuring why scvmm is not fetching the computer name of the vm on xen.

Thanks beforehand.

Windows Keys in VirtualMachineViewer

Hello,
As you know, VMM 2008 R2 use VirtualMachineViewer.exe for connecting to VMs.
How we could configure VirtualMachineViewer.exe (not in full screen mode) for using Windows Keys (for example ALT + TAB) on VMs instead of physical computer?

Regards.

Selecting Logical Networks and VLANs

VMM2012RC, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Hyper-V, System Center App Controller Beta

I'm experiancing an issue with the selection of Logical Networks for virtual machines. When selecting a logical network that has an associated VLAN and subnet, I typically have to select the appropriate Hyper-V virtual network switch, enable vlan, and then choose the vlan from a drop down menu. This seems like a hassel to me but I am able to deal with it. Unfortunatly when it comes to App Controller, this process fails because an App Controller user does not have the ability to make those choices (they can only choose the Logical Network).

My question is, should selecting the Logical Network also cascade the appropriate virtual network switch and vlan configuration for the virtual machine. Is what I'm describing out of the norm or known issue?

WCF Services Sample code for SCVMM 2008

Do we have WCF Services Sample code  for SCVMM 2008?

I find it for SCVMM 2012 RC which is not backward compatible with SCVMM 2012 Beta or SCVMM 2008.

Reset the list of computer names used by a template

$

Hi All,

I've been looking everywhere but can't seem to find an answer for this.

Is there anyway to either reset, or remove individual names that have previously been used to deploy VM's using a template?

For example a template creates a new server and names it using the pattern "SVR##".
I deploy 3 VM's while testing and get "SVR01, SVR02, SVR03"
*I'm talking about Computer Account Names just to be clear, not VM names in SCVMM*

Now that I've finished testing I delete these, hand the process over to the user and let the self provision using App Controller.

The first server they create however is called "SVR04".

What I need to do after testing is reset the name list so the pattern will start again and create that first server as "SVR01"

Any ideas?

Thanks in Advance,
Steve

Hie,

I am using SCVMM 2012 sp1 with Windows Server 2012 Data center edition.(machine A)

I have another server 2012 machine which I updated from server 2008 to 2012 data center edition(Machine B)

But when I try to Migrate Virtual machine from B to A it shows network optimization warning but there is no option in 2012 for that

Also, if i disable the network and then transfer it shows configuration error

Does anyone has any idea how to get past this i am all stuck at this.

VMM 2012 SP1 - Default Placement Path

$

Hi,

We are using SC VMM 2012 SP1 and SC App Controller 2012 Sp1.

We use a 2 node cluster with shared storage.

My problem is that I can´t change the default path where the Virtual Machines get deployed to. It always defaults to C:\Clusterstorage\Volume1. It would be really nice to be able choose a subfolder. In properties of the HyperV hosts the Placement tab´s options are greyed out, so I can´t change it.

As we deploy with App Controller we can´t and don´t want to choose a path when deploying a VM.

Cheers!

SCVMM 2012 Licensing.

Hi All,

A quick licensing question.

I am reasonably up to speed with the new System Center Licensing model but can't find a specific answer for a scenario.

If I want to run SCVMM 2012 on a standlone host that is managing 2  2008R2 (or 2012 for that matter) Hyper-V hosts, what is the minimal licensing I require.

I don't want to license the guest VMs on each Hyper-V host  - lets assume each host has 10 VMs each - I just want the license to cover SCVMM management of the 2 hosts.

What I am asking really  is , is it mandatory to license guest VMs on Hyper-V hosts even though you have no intention of them participating in any other System Center aspects like DPM, SCOM etc. Or is the very fact that the VMs are "touched" by SCVMM make this mandatory?

Thanks

SCVMM 2012, Conntect via conosle does not work when logged in with specified credentials

$

Hi all

I have a problem with the SCVMM 2012 console. When I start the console I select the "Specify credentials" option and then I enter my admin credentials. Afterward the console opens and everything works except the "Connect via Console" function.

When I try to connect to a VM I get the following message:
Virtual Machine Manager lost the connection to the virtual machine for one of the following reasons: Another connection was established to the console of this machine. The virtual machine has been shut down or put into the saved state. The user credentials provided do not have the necessary privilege to connect (0x0003, 0x0300)

It seems that the Virtual Machine Viewer runs not under the admin credentials which I enter at the beginning and therefore the console cannot connect.

Has someone the same issue ? Is it by design that the console connection does not work with specified credentials or is a sort of a bug or error ?

Thx

VMM 2012 and Storage Classifications without SMI-S?

$

Hello everyone,

if I understand the self-service capabilities of VMM 2012 right,

then I need storage classifications to get full self-service cloud

capabilities for our users to assign them specified storage (LUNs),

that they own (payed for). I want to decide which storage they have

to use and don't want the users to select storage completely free.

But only SMI-S storage can be classified.

So how do I get full self-service cloud capabilities without a SMI-S

provider for our SAN-Storage?

Or isn't that possible with VMM 2012?

Or can I classify storage without a SMI-S provider?

Thanks in advance

Joerg
